Sermon Application Questions

Read Colossians 3:1-11

Rod stated idols will convert us, that we will become like them, and that the root sin of idolatry is the 10th commandment about covetousness. (Colossians 3:5)
What are your thoughts on this statement? How have you seen this to be true in your life or the life of others?

Rod identified 3 questions that can help to identify idols in our lives. Please share your thoughts after reading them:

  • When you have a spare moment or you are bored, where does your mind go to? When you wake up, what are you thinking about?
  • What thing if taken away would cause you not to want to live? This answer leads us back to what our idols are.
  • Emotions such as anger, jealousy, worry, frustration, bitterness and fear lead us back to our idols.

To understand what it means to replace an idol, read Colossians 3:1-4. These verses speak of setting our hearts and minds on things above and on Christ and the gospel. They make Jesus our life!
How do spiritual practices help make Colossians 3:1-4 a reality? (Spiritual practices of prayer, meditating on the Word, solitude and silence, sabbath, fasting)
