Sermon Application Questions

In Genesis 1, the Sabbath was created by God on the 7th day (day of completion) and called it holy. Sabbath means rest, deep satisfaction, deep joy. Holy means set apart. Using Bible Gateway or other free internet concordances, conduct a quick word study of "keep the Sabbath." Read the references aloud. What concepts are reinforced? Discuss those concepts and why they are connected with the Sabbath.

Read Matthew 12:1-8, Mark 2:23-28. One of Jesus' many titles is "Lord of the Sabbath". What inferences can you make as a result of Jesus claiming this title?

How might the passages referenced above and those specifically mentioned by Rod (Is 58, Ex 31, 2 Chron 36, Is 61) affect the way we think about the Sabbath?

Why is the Sabbath important for all God's creation?

What is the Holy Spirit telling you about the importance of the Sabbath? How might taking a break from creating, building and making things or doing things help us not only set the day apart for the Lord, but also be a gift to you and your family?

Practically, how might you intentionally prepare yourself to be able to more deeply observe the Sabbath next week?
