Max Tiesma
Max Tiesma is part of the staff of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Kona, where he works to train and equip the next generation of missionaries. YWAM is one of the largest mission sending agencies in the world and Kona is one of their primary bases, and home to University of the Nations. YWAM helps you build the skills, character, and knowledge to bring revival and reformation to wherever God takes you.
I am a school leader at YWAM Kona, which means that I am one of four leaders in a six-month discipleship training school (DTS) where our staff and students spend three months in Kona learning about God’s character, the cross, and how to serve him in the nations. Then the class splits up into teams, and each team goes out to the nations, in faith, to apply what they have learned.
As a school leader, I’m in charge of training our staff, developing discipleship curriculum, providing pastoral care, and many other details that come along with organizing the school. Our staff and leadership team are people who have seen the redemptive power of the cross in our own lives, and we have a God-given passion to facilitate God’s redemption in the lives around us. DTS is a program where God changes the lives of people, who will go on to change the world.
I have been attending Crossroads with my family since I was in middle school. Growing up, I was involved in youth group, and I volunteered in the nursery. At Crossroads I learned about the importance of diving deep with a community of believers.
God has given me a heart for the nation of Cambodia, where I hope to go as a long-term missionary in the not too distant future. Because I work in training and equipping, this mission takes me to a variety of places. In the course of a year, I will typically spend six months in Kona, three months in Cambodia, and three months in various other nations to provide pastoral care to the short term teams that we send out.
This is not a paid job. I am not given a salary for the work that I do with YWAM. I am fully dependent on God’s provision and the generosity of the body of Christ to support the mission that God has placed in my heart.
