Kate & GJ Flikweert
GJ and Kate, along with their two young boys Ben and Isaiah, live in Kampala after living in Gulu, Uganda for more than seven years. Since 2008, their primary work has been discipleship and economic development projects with the Hope Alive community—including microloans, agricultural and skills training, and forestry.
GJ serves in a variety of roles, mostly centered around his work with Hope Alive, a child sponsorship organization. His main focus is discipleship of older students and alumni, as well as economic development projects. This includes starting up and managing several savings & loan groups, a training farm, agricultural training, and supporting the Hope Alive community with opportunities to start up small businesses and income-generating projects. He is also involved in the construction and start of a new Hope Alive site in rural Northern Uganda. In partnership with a local church association, we are in the process of planting a church at this new site.
Kate is primarily home with their two boys, whom she homeschools. She is also involved in the children’s ministry at their church, and is on the leadership team for an organization called Journey Together that facilitates women’s ministry.
Our goal with our ministry here is to come alongside Ugandans and provide training and resources so they can create income sources to support their families. We also focus on continuing to disciple them in their young adult years.
Kate was a part of Crossroads from the very beginning when she joined the church as a start-up when she was a student at Cornerstone University and was blessed to serve with the youth group as well as on the missions team. She moved to Denver, got married and then returned to West Michigan where she and GJ would call Crossroads home. We love Crossroads and are so thankful to have a church that is passionate about what God is doing globally!
