Sermon Application Questions

Consider the following descriptions of spiritual blindness from Mark 8, 9 and 10 and look up each instance. Discuss as you wish:

  • iSetting your mind on the things of man rather than on the things of God (Mark 8:32, 9:34, 10:37)
  • iDoubt (Mark 9:22)
  • A rebellious attitude that resists the truth [i.e., hard hearted] (Mark 10:2)
  • Hindering others from coming to Jesus (Mark 9:38, 10:13)
  • Unwillingness to leave everything for the sake of Christ and the gospel (Mark 10:22)

Recall the distinction between philosophical belief and biblical belief. Next, revisit the story of Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52) and identify the specific way(s) in which he exemplified biblical belief.

What will you do with the mercy of God? Discuss how this question can help us bridge the gap between philosophical belief and biblical belief. Also, discuss how it frames the conversation in such a way that it gives us the proper motivation for acting out our belief.
